PEOPLE { Charlotte Perriand }

C H A R L O T T E  P E R R I A N D

One of the most influential furniture designers of the early modern movement,
CHARLOTTE PERRIAND (1903-1999) introduced the ‘machine age’ aesthetic to interiors in the steel, aluminium and glass furniture she created at Le Corbusier’s architectural studio in the late 1920s and 1930s. She then continued her experiments with different materials.

WHY WE LOVE HER...
When the 24 year old Charlotte Perriand strode into Le Corbusier’s studio at 35 rue de Sèvres, Paris in 1927, and asked him to hire her as a furniture designer, his response was terse. “We don’t embroider cushions here,” he replied and showed her the door. A few months later Le Corbusier apologised.

After being taken by his cousin Pierre Jeanneret to see the glacial Bar sous le Toît, or rooftop bar that Perriand had created in glass, steel and aluminium, for the Salon D’Automne exhibition in Paris, Le Corbusier invited her to join his studio.

Love Blankets

Known as Moroccan wedding blankets, handira are woven out of sheep's wool, cotton and linen by Berber women in the Middle Atlas mountains of Northern Morocco.

Berber wedding blankets are woven in anticipation of, a wedding, by the bride's female relatives. It can take many hours — even weeks — of work to attach those hundreds of mirrored sequins once the weaving is complete; it is thought that during this collaborative task, the bride's relatives teach her all about the birds and the bees, among other marital duties and expectations. After the wedding ceremony, the bride wears the blanket tied around her neck as a kind of cape. It might be associated with her trip to her new marital home, which could be a chilly ride.

For Berbers, objects and visual motifs contain myriad meanings and purposes. The process of hand-weaving, itself, when undertaken mindfully, is thought to endow the textile with baraka, or blessings.

When complete, the wedding blanket serves not only as warmth and decoration for the bride, but also to ward off evil and to bestow fertility and good luck upon the newlyweds.

We are personally obsessed with them and love that they can be used in so many ways!
The detail, pattern, texture and colours on these blankets is so beautiful and they are an amazing addition to any room. As well as being a blanket they can be used as wall hangings, rugs and couch throws.
They also make for a very unique and original wedding gift!

If you are interested in purchasing a Moroccan wedding blanket
we have some beautiful ones for sale in our shop.

NW 13th Avenue loft, Portland

This amazing loft is located in the recently transformed Pearl District in Portland, in an old brick and concrete building that was originally a warehouse and manufacturing facility and has been transformed by one of our favourite interior designers, Jessica Helgerson.
Basically, we love every single thing about this loft.
The colour palette of raw timber, with tan leather... dark earthy grey timber ceiling beams and the soft white walls creates a sense of contrast right from the get go. From the glazed brick tiles in the kitchen, to the custom made antique chinese door console table to the vintage Moroccan rug - it is all ... perfect.
Our favourite part of this loft apartment (and the thing that initially drew us to it) are the Vintage Eames DKW leather, steel, and wood chairs... TO . DIE . FOR .
Jessica Helgerson you are a genius.

Blissful home in Denmark

This home has been awarded 'the most wonderful home' in Denmark
and we're not surprised!

We are LOVING the charcoal washed timber against the stark white walls and floors... such beautiful contrast.

The most amazing quality of this house (in our opinion) is the airiness of it - white french doors, panelled windows and skylight are a great way of allowing natural light to fill the rooms in your home and can also make your house look and feel a lot bigger than it actually is - absolutely beautiful. We would have liked to see a lime washed floor to complete the look but hey, we're not picky!

Great home reno inspiration for anyone out there who is looking for a simple way to make their home more open and light filled.

Whenever in doubt there's nothing like a splash of white paint, loads of windows, glass doors and a charcoal contrast.

Beautiful, easy and effective!

Restored Meditteranean Farm House

This beautiful old farm house was built in the 18th century and has recently been restored to blend the past and the present. Located in a beautiful wine region north of Barcelona in Mediterranean, Spain this home is a strong mix of vintage, industrial and contemporary design.

We love that each part of this house looks like a piece of art, from the stone walls to the timber beamed ceilings the designer has kept the as much of the original materials as possible.

Contrasting textures and styles are what makes this home
so unique and beautiful.

Clay, stone, wood and cement have been incorporated into the existing structure to help preserve what was already there. A mixture of industrial and contemporary furnishings such as the modrian-esque chairs evoke a modern vibe while the rustic finishes such as the walls, that resemble a sheet of tea stained watercolour paper, enhance this homes sense of history.

Not to mention the lavender garden...

Perfection.
